In the postal sector, the revenue dynamic recorded in the first quarter of the year saw an overall increase of 1.4% compared to the corresponding quarter of 2021, with parcel delivery services increasing by 2.6%, while mail services (whether or not part of the universal service) were down by 2.4% overall. This was reported by AgCom’s Communications Observatory.
Volumes
With reference to the composition of the sector by type of service, revenues from parcel delivery services accounted for 77.4% of total resources in the first quarter of 2022, while the reduction in mail services included in the Universal Service continued (down to 12.5%). When it comes to volume, a total of 233 million parcels were delivered in the first three months of 2022 (-4.5% compared to the corresponding volumes in 2021), 87.1% of which had a domestic sender and recipient.
The leadership of Poste
The competitive picture of the sector as a whole (mail and parcel services, whether or not included in the universal service) confirms the Poste Italiane group as the main operator with a 34.1% overall share (albeit down by 3.0 percentage points year-on-year). Looking at the competitive structure of the individual market components, the Poste Italiane group dominates the mail services sector with a 96.4% share.
