"The challenges we are facing require large-scale, long-term investments. Today, as in the past, private savings are a key factor in economic development." This was stated by Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti speaking at the event for the 150th anniversary of postal savings organized by Poste Italiane and Cassa Depositi e Prestiti at the La Nuvola Congress Center in Rome. Postal savings have a "social role," he adds, because they are "an important factor of inclusiveness, education, and social security accessible to all and at low cost" with "the widespread presence of postal services throughout the country, often abandoned by credit companies. Since its inception, postal savings have been a fundamental tool for economic and social growth."
The synergy between Poste and CDP
“The synergy between Poste Italiane and CDP,” Giorgetti stressed, “has created a unique model of collaboration, and postal savings have been crucial both in the post-war reconstruction and in the macroeconomic stability of the country. Poste and CDP must continue to play a leading role, and they can do so thanks to Poste's widespread presence throughout the country and the typical characteristics of the collection products: simplicity, no access restrictions, and universality, even for those who do not have basic economic skills." Giorgetti therefore stressed the value of postal savings as a factor of social inclusiveness, financial education and social security: "Knowledge is fundamental for facing changes and making choices suited to one's needs".
From Quintino Sella to today
During his speech, Giorgetti quoted Quintino Sella, his "illustrious predecessor" to whom we owe the law establishing postal savings, who used to say that "a people is worth as much as it saves". "Sella himself," Giorgetti added, "intended to spread a culture of savings throughout the country and promote economic and social development. The economic solidity and civilization of a nation depend also and above all on the ability of its citizens to accumulate savings, using them to improve their own conditions and those of society".
